  • Classroom Periodic Table Poster

    Funded Jul 9, 2024

My students are using the Big Periodic chart collaboratively in class. It has become more effective to discuss the periodic pattern and trends using the giant chart.

The students were excited that the periodic table contains more recent information than the periodic table on their 20 years old textbook. They also appreciate the the Atomic mass is rounded off to 2 decimal places. In addition, the periodic tables groups and families are color coded .

I will extend the use of the table for student led instructions within small groups. This will support the different learning levels and styles within the Chemistry classes.”

  • Notebooks and Pencils

    Funded Oct 18, 2023

The basic needs often have the largest impact on a student learning experience. With your donation, I was able to purchase notebooks to give students who come to class without supplies. You made it possible for students to maintain their notes in one place. Thank you so much!

I also teach older students after school. This is an Education Opportunity Program that is offered to students who did not graduate on time. In most cases the students have had a long break from school and often report to school straight from work. Because of your donation, I am able to supply and keep notebooks for their work. These students appreciate the convenience of not carrying back and forth.”

  • Authentic Science Experience

    Funded Feb 19, 2022

The excitement on my students' face exhibit the joy and engagement the supplies you funded brought to my students! The students were able to perform flame tests with different metal compounds.

The students were able to make connections with real world experiences. To quote one the students " Now I finally understand how they make fireworks!". Thank you for helping my students bring science to live.

The students were able to form a deeper understanding of the content because they were more interested, when we discussed the theory behind their exciting observations.

Thank you for supporting my students Flame test lab!”

  • Let's Get All Students Engaged!

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

Thank you again for your generous donation that allowed me to pay for an annual subscription for Nearpord Application.

This application provides an interactive and collaborative work environment in which every students voice is heard. All students get a chance to respond to prompts that gives them choices to use text, images or voice depending on their preferred learning style.

All the students' work can be displayed on the smart board at the same time so that they can learn from each other. Nearpod allows for students names to be made anonymous to encourage all students to participate. I also include inbuilt assessments in videos and activities which allows me to check for students understanding continually and modify instruction accordingly.

Student engagement has increased with the use of Neapord. We appreciate the role you played in this improvement!”

  • Head Phones for Personalized Learning

    Funded Oct 16, 2019

Thank you for your generosity towards the purchase for Headphones and Colored paper for my Science students. My students are enjoying their multimedia lessons on Google Classroom within a conducive learning environment.

Students appreciate that they have access to headphones anytime in my class and sometimes borrow them to use in other classes. This has created a fair and equitable access to learning resources that increases the students motivation to learn.

The colored paper is appealing to students and they use it for their project activities. I also use the colored paper to differentiate tasks for students, which has proven to be an effective way to assign different tasks tailored to students needs.

My students appreciate your kindness as they expressed in the Thank you notes.”

  • Science Projects Supplies.

    Funded Dec 28, 2018

My students are excited to use the printer to make copies of their research information. In addition, they use the different colored markers to collaborate on activities. The pictures uploaded is an example of a collaborative activity in which students researched different historical atomic models. Then they shared the information they collected and analyzed the differences among the four models. They also provided a time line that shows how the atomic model has changed over time.

The students are happy to have writing utensils when they come to school unprepared. Given that some students have unstable families, they move among different foster homes or in cases where parents are separated they live in two different homes. It is not uncommon for students to come to school without required stationery. My students feel free to pick the items they need from the supply area and appreciate that their learning is not impacted by their living circumstances.

It will be possible to for my students to print more work in my class and submit their assignments on time. They will also be able to print additional resources that they can take home as need be. They will continue to collaborate on projects and they are happy to see their individual contribution since they can use different colors to report their work. We are grateful that your donation made this possible!”

  • Physical Fitness/Boxing Program

    Funded Mar 12, 2018

On behalf of the boys and girls who participated in the boxing club, thank you so much for your generosity. Boxing club students used the gloves and protective helmets during practice and competitions. The number of students who could participate in boxing club increased after these supplies were delivered.

The students were excited to receive the new supplies. They liked the idea that the theme colors for the gloves and helmets accommodated both the girls and boy's preferences. I wrote this grant on behalf of the students' coach who worked in the school's cafeteria. The coach shared that the students were very grateful when they received the supplies.

The students coach left his position in the school. When the school gets a new coach, the supplies will be used to sustain and expand a boxing club. This club plays an important role to provide a safe haven for our students. It is an interesting activity that keeps the students engaged in a positive way during their free time.”

  • Hands-On Science Activities

    Funded Nov 20, 2017

Thank you again for your generous donation!

My students have been able to do science experiments using the batteries that were purchased through this grant. This has been an inspiring and engaging experience for the students and their their interest in science has increased.

The Gloves have enhanced safety in the lab. We are now able to do labs that require heating in a more safe environment.

I hope that the enhanced interest in science by my students will motivate some of them to consider careers in STEM areas.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Mureria

  • Science Classroom Supplies

    Funded Jan 7, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donation!

Any students who comes to class without writing utensils is able to use the pens that were purchased through this grant. My students and I are using the sharpener to maintain our pencils during class time. The colored paper is used for projects and to provide varied set assignments to different students. My students created appealing scrap books on different topics. I have attached sample pictures for the scrap books.

The convenience of sharpening pencils in class has reduced idle time among students who come to class unprepared. My students are pleased to know that their lack of supplies does not impede their class work and students are not afraid that they would appear lacking in my class. The students are also motivated to use colored paper. They like to be creative and enjoy choosing their favorite colors for their projects.

The students will develop three dimensional models using different colored paper. For example, demonstrate the compounds formed when different elements combine after learning how elements bond to form compounds.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Mureria

  • Support Materials for Science Classes

    Funded Dec 31, 2015

My students and I are very grateful for your donations that were used to purchase classroom resources.

The pictures attached are examples of students' work using the new resources. In one case, the students developed measurement scale posters. The measurements range from macro to nano scale and are in increments of 10 units on the metric system. The students were then required to place a variety of objects around the corresponding measurement on their scale diagram. In a separate project, each student was assigned an element from the periodic table. Students were required to do a research on specific information on the element, create a poster and present to the class the information gathered.

Students were excited to use the glue sticks especially because previously I poured glue on little containers and they used pop sticks with the containers. It was messy! The students are appreciating the neater and more precise glue sticks or smaller bottles of glue. Though they thought the microphones were outdated, students who forget to bring in their headphones are happy to use the ones that were purchased with this grant.

The students will be able to do more projects and build more scientific models using the resources. We use Google classroom more often during class assignments and for independent activities outside class too. Currently, the students are learning how to write ionic equations by constructing ionic compounds using the resources and analyzing how the ions combine to form the compounds.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Mureria

My students range from 14 to 20 years of age, boys and girls who speak a variety of first language. They attend an urban high school within the poorest region of the city. 72 % are English language learners and 84% are economically disadvantaged are on free or reduced price lunch, yet their thirst for knowledge is well above these percentage levels. These students work effectively collaboratively because learners who share a first language assist each other with translation. They learn better when they see or represent their work as visuals. Due to the high poverty levels, these students lack basic supplies like paper and pen. It is a challenge for most of them to afford chart paper, markers and other supplies that support collaborative learning. Dry erase markers are very effective in involving all to participate in class because I have improvised "dry erase charts" that all can use to show their response during class discussions. This strategy supports differentiated instruction.
