  • Atkins Classroom Library

    Funded Aug 26, 2021

I am so incredibly grateful to your generous donation. Thank you so much for adding to my classroom library and helping me get some really diverse and incredible books in my kids hands.

Already there has been immediate interest in these texts you helped purchase for my classroom. I have done a preview of books and they have been flying off my shelves and into kids hands. I am so glad these kids can experience stories through different genres and levels that help them to engage in the windows and mirrors that books can be in our lives.

We started out this year talking about how we are readers when we walk in this room. And every kid is taking on this challenge to read for fun and for learning and for all sorts of reasons. I give kids time twice a week to just get lost in their books for choice. We've read outside in the sun overlooking the bay. We've read huddled in corners in the classroom on rainy days. But we are establishing reading routines and sharing the stories we are falling in love with.

I have a particular student who immediately heard the story of Louis Zamperini in Unbroken and wanted to take that book. She is now almost finished the story and has been sharing her reading with the students around her who can't wait to also read this inspiring true story.

I have students who are appreciating seeing themselves in the books they have chosen. And sharing those with me. I can't wait to share some of the photos of kids reading these books you so generously donated. So thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Atkins

  • Class Novel Set: Some Kind of Courage

    Funded Oct 12, 2019

This book really helped paint a picture for my students of what early Washington looked like while drawing them into a riveting story. Dan Gemeinhart is a gifted storyteller and helps students not only visualize historical places, spaces and people, but he also has a gift at creating a narrative that helps students empathize and see others. We had a great time reading this book and connecting to some amazing local places. Thank you so much for getting this class set into kids hands. I truly appreciate you all.”

  • The Never Ending Story Shelf: Fund My Classroom Library!

    Funded Sep 23, 2019

First of all thank you so much for your donation to our classroom library. These books are going a long way. One of the difficulties a lot of students (and people) have is finding a book that they enjoy, and your donation has helped get more diverse books into their hands so my students can dive into books. Books should be a mirror and a window for students so they can see themselves in the stories they read but also learn about others and perhaps even strengthen their empathy as they read about people who's lives may look and feel vastly different than their own. I'm so glad my students have access to these books. Not only are they interesting, but they also cover a variety of lexile levels since I have a diverse level of readers in my class. I have some students who read at a third grade level and some who read at nearly a tenth grade level. What is important for all my students is they can reach for a book that fits them just right. I always remind them to find those "just right" books. Books that not only they enjoy but are at a comfortable reading level. The best way for us to become better readers is to read and to read something that challenges not only our lexile levels but also how we perceive the world. Thank you again for your donation to our classroom library. It is truly appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Atkins

It is so important that kids read, but they need to read books they like. I want a classroom library that is full of books that represent each and every student in my classroom. We need books that cover the diversity of our classroom from POC writers to characters who deal with homelessness. I want books that feel real and relatable to my students. I also want a range of reading levels because reading can be difficult. Graphic novels help. Audiobooks help. Higher content but lower reading levels help. I just want kids reading books and walking away understanding how reading can transport us and help us become individuals who care. Please help me meet that need. Thank you so much!
