Students at our school often need modifications or adaptations to grade level curriculum in order for students to be successful. The curriculum not only needs to be adapted to best address the needs of our students, it also has to be exciting and engaging so our students stay interested. As a music therapist, one way I have found to get our students interested in reading is by teaching them how to read music. Prior to this school year, I’ve taught students how to recognize and identify letters, colors, and even shapes by creating adapted music notation. By using the adapted music notation, I have created bell charts for the students to play 8 note melodies to preferred songs. Now that some students are familiar with how to read music and play the bells, I’d like to challenge them by teaching them how to play the ukulele. Learning a ukulele will not only impact the students ability to read but also address joint attention, turn-taking, impulse control, and fine motor skills. Grouping students together in “ukulele classes” will also provide opportunities for the students to practice social skills while gaining confidence and knowledge in their academic skills.
