Our world has been rapidly changing and progressing for many years, yet teaching styles have not been meeting the needs of our students' styles of learning. How can we expect an energetic, creative, and curious fourth grader to sit in a hard plastic chair all day and truly learn? With our goals to help children become collaborative and creative thinkers, my students do not spend very much of their day sitting at a desk. During the time the students do sit at desks or tables, they have difficulty staying focused and engaged as the chairs they have are hard and uncomfortable.
Students in 2019 need to have alternative seating options just as adults in the workplace find they are more productive when they have options. I am hoping to purchase wobble stools, balance balls, floor seats, and wobble cushions to help create an inviting and energizing environment. These seating options help students to develop their core strength, improve their posture and control their constant energy.
Student focus, motivation, and engagement are all improved when they are allowed some movement and choice in their work area. Currently, most of my students prefer to work on the floor around the room or standing at desks rather than in their hard plastic chairs. If we were all given a choice of various types of seats, what would you choose? The wobble stools and balance balls give the students a seating option that allows their body some small movement opportunities and results in better focus and more engagement in their learning.
