Learning "En Plein Aire"

Funded Oct 23, 2019

Students in elementary and middle are learning on these fantastic "Donated Easels". The look of excitement on their faces when they saw their new easels was priceless. Facilitated by the weather on our beautiful, verdant campus, students are now taking the classroom outside, En Plein Aire.

Learners are showing understanding of the Florida Zebra Butterfly, the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly and its preferred flowers. They are learning about the interdependence of nature and the rational of saving native species that have associated for thousands of years. They are learning about horticulture and botanical geography.

They are documenting the Indian, Botanical Boa Constrictor, the Banyans of Coral Gables. Like Alexander the Great, they camp and play under these giant epiphytes. Armed with knowledge, they take note of the beautiful "Stranglers" in their environment. They look at real estate with the keen eyes of adults, wondering if the Banyans they encounter are too close to property. Will they climb and break the walls or strangle the gory, sewer pipes? Will they crack someone's dream pool?

These folding, field easels have helped with the curriculum. They can be easily stored in a tight classroom, and they are light enough for young students to handle and transport. They only need a few steps to make user friendly for different height students.

My Students and I appreciate this generous donation.”

With gratitude,
