I have many students this year who speak almost no English. While they do receive services as English Language Learners, these students nonetheless are struggling in an environment where the instruction occurs exclusively in English. I would like to be able to provide each of these students with a copy of our class novel in Spanish as a supplementary text. My Spanish-speaking students are just as deserving of the opportunity to participate in the upcoming unit on the novel "The Outsiders" as their English-speaking classmates. These students often have to work twice as hard as many of their peers, and I would like the ability to scaffold their learning by providing them with a copy of the text in Spanish. Once they are able to comprehend the basic plot of the story in Spanish, they will be able to participate more productively in class discussions and learn at a much higher level. My Spanish-speaking students would benefit enormously from the opportunity to read the class novel in a language they can comprehend!
