My students will be given the opportunity to visit our classroom library to select new books weekly. Because many of our scholars have not been in a physical classroom since the 2019-2020 school year, this will be their first time experiencing the joy of selecting new independent reading books for a very long time. If you remember the thrill of opening up a book and diving into an unfamiliar world—learning about foreign places, befriending interesting characters, and exploring new ideas—you know how exciting this is! These students need a place to store and protect our classroom books. These seat sacks will provide students with a means of organizing their books so they stay in great shape for use by future students. In addition to helping students develop their organizational skills, I believe that these seat sacks will promote a greater degree of safety as we return to in-person learning. Having students keep their independent reading books (and additional personal supplies) with them will mitigate their need to walk around the classroom, which will help tremendously with social distancing. Lastly, these seat sacks are a great way to give students ownership over their space and materials. With that sense of responsibility comes a greater sense of belonging to our classroom community.
