  • Bring Remote Lessons to My Civics Class

    Funded Sep 16, 2020

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for contributing to the project that has given my students access to New York Times Upfront Magazines this school year. The past few months have been the most difficult of my professional career and having access to useful and reliable resources has meant more to my students and I then I could adequately express in a short thank you letter.

My classes are fully remote at the moment and it is difficult to connect with my students. However, it is more important than ever to discuss current events. I have tried my best to work in a few days per month to discuss topics that interest my students and ones that help them better understand the current political climate.

We were able to discuss the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September, the election process throughout October and November, and more recently the uprising at the Capitol. I have a lesson planned for this Friday on the First Amendment and social media. None of this would have been possible without you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pigeon

  • Printer for Ms. P's Class!!

    Funded Sep 4, 2019

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the donations that were made to provide my class with a color printer, scanner, and copier for this school year. We had an incredibly difficult start to the school year and I needed this printer more than ever. In fact, my union had to file a class action grievance because our copy machines ran out of toner and the copy center could not open for weeks.

This printer has allowed me to print progress reports for students, scan colorful examples that I can upload to Google classroom, and print extra copies of assignments for students without leaving the room. I have even been able to help my students print color copies of their projects when our library's color printer went down for a few days.

To say this printer has been a lifesaver would be an understatement. Even my colleagues have benefitted because I share it with several. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pigeon

  • Ms. P’s Civics Education Initiative

    Funded Aug 25, 2019

I wanted to thank you once again for your generous donations that have allowed my students to access the print copies and online teaching resources associated with Scholastic's Upfront magazines. This project has impacted more students than I originally planned for because I received common planning time with my colleagues and they have used the materials in their Civics classes as well.

The online videos and activities have been truly incredible. Each magazine focuses on current events, government issues, world affairs, and so much more. I find that some of the most engaging conversations that we have had as a class have related to these magazines. You have enriched my school year and positively impacted hundreds of students.

Several teachers in my department are pushing to add this valuable resource for future students as well. I am hopeful that we can make that happen and my current students will continue to enjoy it because of you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pigeon

I am hoping that I can raise funds for a classroom set of Scholastic magazines that will be helpful to a new course I am teaching and will allow my students to discuss real world issues. Massachusetts is pushing hard to make civic engagement an important aspect of Social Studies curriculums in every school. I have used these magazines in the past and they allowed my students to learn about ongoing current events and debate issues that face teenagers like them. They also give students the ability to analyze important Supreme Court decisions that are still relevant today. Overall, the UpFront magazines put out by the New York Times help students gain the skills necessary to be productive citizens in the future and understand their rights. This will provide a classroom set of student magazines and teacher resources for each of the 14 issues they release this school year. Any help in making this possible would be truly appreciated. Thank you so much!
