  • Sketchbooks Express Ourselves

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

Students were so happy to receive the makings for their sketchbooks. They enjoyed constructing their sketchbooks--the children bound a combination of worksheets, graph paper, and blank papers into a book and chose colors to bind it, then decorated the cover to express themselves.

We use them each class to sketch ideas. My students are so proud of their creations and love to take them out to work in them. They fill them with drawings and use them to practice different techniques before working on a big piece.

I tell them that at the end of the year, they will be able to see how they have grown over the school year.

Thank you so very much for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Connolly

  • My Sketchbook, My Story

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

My students and I are very grateful to you for your support.

When we were sent home a couple of weeks ago and I was thrilled to be able to send my students home with their sketchbooks and supplies! When we meet online, we are able to work together with the same materials.

The sense of ownership and pride in their work is evident when they show me what they are working on. During this time, it is so important that children have an outlet and a means of expression.

    Thank you for your generosity.”

  • Mighty Masks for Mighty Kids

    Funded Aug 12, 2020

I wanted to let you know how much my students and I appreciate your support. Wearing a mask all the time can be very scary. Having the ability to create their own design on their own mask helped gave my students a sense of power and control over the situation that we have found ourselves in.

My students were thrilled to find that not only could they design a mask, they could keep it and re-use it. The fabric markers and dye were fun to use and I know the children loved making their own masks!

Thank you again for your generosity on behalf of my school community.”

  • Sketchbooks That Tell My Story

    Funded Dec 16, 2019

My classes were very excited to learn that they would be making their own sketchbooks! I copied some sketch prompts and support worksheets onto the three hole punch paper and the students bound these pages between the manila paper with linen thread and then decorated the cover with the gel pens.

The sketchbooks have blank pages and sketch prompts. One of the sketch prompts is "practice drawing an eye". We are practicing drawing the features separately before we start looking in the mirrors.

Because of your generous donation, my students are creating a book that come June, will be full of the thoughts and ideas that tell their story. We are so grateful for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Connolly

Sketchbooks are used by artists to record thoughts, ideas and work out problems. I want my students to create their own sketchbook and use it as a tool to take notes, sketch and develop ideas. Each class will begin with students working in their sketchbook, where they will practice techniques and develop the skills they are learning as young artists. Students will be able to refer back to these techniques as they work on their projects. Students will use the donated materials to make their own sketchbooks. Students will design the cover and bind their own sketchbook. Each page in their book will become a record of their daily work and progress throughout the year. At the end of the year, in addition to their completed projects, they will have a wonderful record of their work. Their sketchbook will tell the story of their year--it is my goal that they will reflect on their learning and see how
