Learning Animal Needs- Hatching Chicks from Eggs
Funded Jan 8, 2024I cannot even begin to describe just how powerful this experience was for our little first graders. I just honestly cannot find the right words. We began this journey with 41 eggs from various chicken breeds. The students were able to compare and contrast the colors and sizes of the eggs. Also, we made predictions about what colors the chicks would be. The eggs themselves were numbered so each child adopted an egg and kept close watch. The purchase of the incubators was the most amazing part of this process because we were able to keep the eggs in our classrooms and closely monitor every change in real time. As the pictures will reveal, the eggs were magical.
When the day came for us to be able to candle and see the embryo inside the egg we were blessed to be able to see movement inside. We even saw a tiny little foot! Our students could witness life inside the shell and then there were connected. We began the lock down process on the 18th and waited finally we began to see the cracks as the little chicks were making their way into the world. Thank you for making this happen for us. Our students will never forget this experience!”

On Point Guided Reading- Teaching With Urgency
Funded Jan 27, 2020This Hello Literacy conference was not in person, like many other events this year. however, we still met virtually by using Zoom. The conference was amazing and I did learn so many practical strategies that I am already beginning to develop for next year. The highlight of this event was mostly HOW to create "avid" readers instead of "able" readers. Avid readers are students who just enjoy reading. Jen Jones exposed me to ideas like creating a morning routine in which parent volunteers come and spend time reading with students in the morning. Due to Covid-19, we will have to tweak this idea a bit because it has already been mentioned that we will have to limit the number of visitors to the building for the coming school year. I have already talked with my principal about having 5th graders assigned to the lower grades classes who will come and read with students. Also, I learned how to build the strategy of inferencing and poetry into a daily morning routine as well so that the students are building the skills without taking time away from other areas. I learned so many other high yield low prep strategies for teaching kids to enjoy reading and I cannot wait to have my students back again so that I can implement the new things I have learned. This conference has changed the way I will teach in the future.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and 2 other donors.Books About Africa to Inspire Young Scholars
Funded Sep 28, 2019I am writing again to express my sincere gratitude for your generous donation or books about Africa to my classroom. My students have enjoyed learning about specific parts of Africa through the books from those regions.
I am very pleased because there are many various teaching standards and global themes that I will be able to cover with such a wide variety of books.
You have opened up the world for my students and I am eternally grateful. Thank you for investing in my students and their educational experience.”
