Our Au-Some Classroom!
Funded Sep 11, 2020I cannot thank you enough for your generosity! With your help, we have been able to create a wonderful functional skills program for my students. All of the materials have made it possible for the lessons to meet their exact needs and I cannot wait until they can get their hands on it! With COVID and virtual learning, we have not yet been able to have the students interact with the materials, but I so look forward to what they will gain when we are able to utilize the program and materials! Thank you again, I could not have done it without you!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Holzum
We Are AU-Some!!!
Funded Aug 22, 2019I cannot thank you enough for donating to my project! The impact you have had is immeasurable. The students absolutely love all of the materials! Here are just a few of the ways we have been using our new supplies:
1. Books:
We use all of our new books in our language and social skills group lessons. Each month has a theme that both the language and the social skills lessons align with, and the books coincide with them! Not only do the types of books I chose grab the students' attention, but they also increase their overall engagement in the stories! The students love interacting with the colorful pages and with the tactile-friendly illustrations! They LOVE them!
Reading looks a little different for the students in my classroom than you would typically see in a school. None of the students are independent readers, but we are working very hard on engagement and interaction with the stories, in addition to acquiring some beginning literacy skills. These include skills such as recognizing that print reads from left to right, top to bottom, recognizing separate words, letter recognition, answering basic WH questions, etc. The students use their augmentative communication devices to answer questions about the story and to just talk about what they see/like about them! The books we received through this particular project are PERFECT for learning and working on these skills!
2. Busy Boards/Learning to Dress Boards/Latches Boards
Fine motor skills are tough skills to acquire for my kiddos. Not only to the busy boards and other fine motor activities we received through this project work on these types of skills, but they also target life skills that we are trying to master as well! We work hard everyday on becoming more and more independent, and the materials received through this project have definitely helped!
3. Office Supplies:
Finally, the office supplies have allowed me to create materials needed for lessons and activities and to maintain an environment in which the students are supported and cared for.
Thank you all again for everything! You have seriously impacted the lives of my students!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Holzum
