  • Our Au-Some Classroom!

    Funded Sep 11, 2020

I cannot thank you enough for your generosity! With your help, we have been able to create a wonderful functional skills program for my students. All of the materials have made it possible for the lessons to meet their exact needs and I cannot wait until they can get their hands on it! With COVID and virtual learning, we have not yet been able to have the students interact with the materials, but I so look forward to what they will gain when we are able to utilize the program and materials! Thank you again, I could not have done it without you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Holzum

  • We Are AU-Some!!!

    Funded Aug 22, 2019

I cannot thank you enough for donating to my project! The impact you have had is immeasurable. The students absolutely love all of the materials! Here are just a few of the ways we have been using our new supplies:

    1. Books:

We use all of our new books in our language and social skills group lessons. Each month has a theme that both the language and the social skills lessons align with, and the books coincide with them! Not only do the types of books I chose grab the students' attention, but they also increase their overall engagement in the stories! The students love interacting with the colorful pages and with the tactile-friendly illustrations! They LOVE them!

Reading looks a little different for the students in my classroom than you would typically see in a school. None of the students are independent readers, but we are working very hard on engagement and interaction with the stories, in addition to acquiring some beginning literacy skills. These include skills such as recognizing that print reads from left to right, top to bottom, recognizing separate words, letter recognition, answering basic WH questions, etc. The students use their augmentative communication devices to answer questions about the story and to just talk about what they see/like about them! The books we received through this particular project are PERFECT for learning and working on these skills!

    2. Busy Boards/Learning to Dress Boards/Latches Boards

Fine motor skills are tough skills to acquire for my kiddos. Not only to the busy boards and other fine motor activities we received through this project work on these types of skills, but they also target life skills that we are trying to master as well! We work hard everyday on becoming more and more independent, and the materials received through this project have definitely helped!

    3. Office Supplies:

Finally, the office supplies have allowed me to create materials needed for lessons and activities and to maintain an environment in which the students are supported and cared for.

Thank you all again for everything! You have seriously impacted the lives of my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Holzum

All of my students are diagnosed with profound autism and are in my self-contained program specifically designed for them. Due to the severity of the disability and the number of students that I am serving, the need for these materials has never been greater. I am struggling to meet their needs due to a shortage of supplies that our district will not provide. The students all have extremely high needs academically, socially, and behaviorally. At this time, I supply almost 100% of the materials I use with the students. Our district has very little in its budget and therefore I cannot get all of the supplies I need to help our students in all facets of their education. The supplies requested will support the needs of our students and I am hoping to be able to give them everything I can to facilitate their learning! My au-some students need proper materials in order to get the education they deserve! In working closely with the other professionals that services our students, we know that the consistent practice requiring fine motor skills improves not only the specific skills on which they are working, but also the skills that allow them to enhance their levels of independence in the areas of self-help skills, writing skills, cutting skills, etc., all of which are serious struggles for my kiddos. The Busy Boards, Learning to Dress Boards, and Latches Boards all assist in these areas. Additionally, the books requested will enhance our social skills and reading groups/lessons. Finally, the office supplies will allow me to maintain an environment in which the students are supported and cared for. I truly couldn't make this a reality without your support! Thank you so much!
