  • Beauty and Truth in LGBTQ+ Literature

    Funded Jan 14, 2025

I am so grateful for your speedy support of this project. With a very limited book budget from my school, I am really excited that students will have choice in this unit. There are so many great choices in these options - and you are an integral part in offering them.

I can't wait to introduce these books next week!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

  • Mid-Year Pick Me Up for Classroom Lighting and Supplies!

    Funded Dec 4, 2024

WOW! I am so thrilled (and so are my students) to have access to these supplies, materials, decorations, and furniture for our classroom. The gap between fall and winter break is tough, but this will figuratively and literally light up our room! All of this will be immediately useful. This has lifted a real weight - and I can't thank you enough.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

  • Building Class Sets for Better Learning

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

Thank you so much for helping me provide more books for my students! We are reading this in class right now, and these extra copies will help students that are currently using digital copies to read at home. We appreciate your donation - and can't wait for these to arrive.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

  • Art and Identity in World Literature

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

I am so appreciative of you fully funding this project! It is so helpful to provide these materials to students and I couldn't do it without you. I am looking forward to building these with students (and building my own as our class guide). Thank you so much for supporting our classroom!”

  • You Need It? I Got It!

    Funded May 8, 2024

Thank you again for your generous donations to this project. My students were just using this resource this morning! Teenagers appreciate when these things are accessible to them. I'm so glad that my classroom is getting a restock of all of these supplies. You're really making a difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

  • Back to Basics

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

Every day seems to come with a new need for materials, but all of these supplies have greatly reduced student and teacher need for supplies this year that help us with daily organization and tasks. New folders have made students so happy who need help organizing their things (and me too with all of the papers I need to organize for grading!) There is not one pencil left either and just a handful of glue sticks. A clear area in the classroom that was stocked and where students could refresh their needs and gather learning materials gave space for me as a teacher to give feedback and address student questions effectively.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

  • Building Class Sets for Better Learning

    Funded Jun 21, 2022

Thank you for support in purchasing these books for students. As I read our end of year surveys, I see the impact this particular book has on students. It has allowed them to consider their values, the definition of family, the growth of identity in adolescence, and learn about new cultures. The poetic nature of this novel is highly appealing to our readers and makes for an engaging first year text. With this feedback from our students, I can see what an impact it has made on them and it makes me thrilled to use these texts next year.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

  • Art and Identity in World Literature

    Funded May 10, 2023

I am so excited to continue this project with my students in the coming year and build on our knowledge of world literature. The self-expression that students experience with these notebooks is one of my favorite on-going classroom activities. Thank you for supporting my students' learning and our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

  • Ready to Write!

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Our class notebooks have become spaces for great learning, reflection, and goal setting. As we come to the end of the semester, we have added over 30 resources into our notebook that demonstrate the growth of our reading and writing this year.

Each student having access to a notebook specifically for this class makes it so that we can ensure students' materials are not only organized, but also makes it so that they can see the progress visually that they are making. We glue something into these notebooks almost every other day, and so all of those glue sticks really help!

They truly loved all of the stickers as way to make their notebooks their own too!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

This classroom project was brought to life by Bill Gates and 2 other donors.
  • So Fresh, So Clean, So Ready to Learn

    Funded Aug 2, 2022

The supplies provided through this project continue to help students meet their basic needs every day. Our "Take What You Need" space continues to stay fully stocked, with deodorant, pads, tampons, hair ties, tissue, and hand sanitizer being the most in-demand. Even just yesterday, a student I don't teach came in to ask for supplies - which means that students know this is a place they can get what they need!

Students are thrilled that this space lives on and is restocked when needed. We greatly appreciate your donations to help students feel comfortable at school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pietz

In our World Literature class, my students make connections between their lives and the larger global community. Following a unit studying poetry from around the world, we will read Elizabeth Acevedo's brilliant novel in verse, Clap When You Land. This novel provides a bridge between our study of poetry and our novel studies, and allows our students to explore genre while engaging in a powerful story. A coming-of-age story about two sisters separated by family secrets and brought together by tragedy, Clap When You Land explores the nature of loss, as well as the beauty of family, home, and love. My students are captivated by Acevedo's lyrical voice, as well as the dual narratives of the sisters. Yahaira, growing up in New York, and Camino, growing up in the Dominican Republic, cross cultural boundaries to come together, and their journeys provide both a mirror in which many of my students can see themselves, as well as a window into other experiences.
