By using these tools for a multi-sensory approach to literacy, I will be able to help my students close the gap that has been created by low socioeconomic status, and a global pandemic. This will allow me to fill Social Emotional Learning needs, as well as academic needs.
I have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach so my students will receive instruction that many pay tens of thousands of dollars for outside of the classroom. Using color-coded systems and a scientifically based, systematic program, my students will be able to make sense of the English language and make significant gains in reading, writing, and spelling. In turn they will be successful in all other subject areas, and be prepared to take standardized state tests next year. This is a very beneficial opportunity for these students that have a great need to move and utilize tactile learning strategies to grow.
By funding this project, you will be helping close the gap from which these students are greatly affected. The red and green crayons on top of paper with plastic canvas creates raised print which becomes a multi-sensory experience when finger-traced. (Your pointer finger has over 1,000 little nerves that act as information receptors.) The red folders will house all things "Red Words," which are high-frequency and non-phonetic words, (sight words). The envelopes are to house all the tools, (i.e. crayons, plastic canvas, finger-tapping hands, etc.) The restaurant trays will serve as a holder for two-grain sand. We will use this as a tactile measure to model and practice phoneme/grapheme connections. The word-ladder books will be an extension of phonics practice that build vocabulary and critical thinking skills. The Phonics Poetry serves as a literature connection to the each new phonics concept when it is being taught, so students see it in print.
