These materials will allow my students and I to do a fun lab comparing the "Coefficient of Restitution" of different balls for different sports. "Coefficient of Restitution" is a "fancy physics way" of discussing how bouncy something is. It is important not only in sports, but also in automotive safety, merchandise packing, etc. This lab will bridge the gap between physics and physical education. It will allow the students who normally excel on the court or on the field, yet get bored sitting in their seats to be excited and active in their physics class. My students will get to compare basketballs to tennis balls, baseballs to volleyballs, and think about why they are engineered the way they are. The games are played very differently, so the balls need to be built differently as well. This will also help students make the connection between design and function.
