Providing students with literature that was created by people who share similar cultures and includes characters or situations that represent their culture is the first step in creating a more inclusive classroom. My initial focus is on finding books to highlight National Hispanic Heritage Month and American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It is my goal to continue to focus on increasing the diversity shown through my library to include other under-represented groups. Malorie Blackman said, "Reading is an exercise in empathy; an exercise in walking in someone else's shoes for a while." My hope is to create connections build empathy!
