This year my students will be participating in Lucy Calkin's Reading Workshop. The premise of this language arts curriculum is student voice and choice. What better way to get kids excited about reading than to let them choose their books! In past years the classroom library has been one of the busiest places in the room. Students gravitate to the shelves because they want to immerse themselves in an adventure, relate to a like-minded character, or simply explore a new world. For our workshop to be successful, our classroom needs to have a large variety of genres, reading levels, and authors. Students will be completing, on average, one book per week. For each student that equates to nearly 40 books per year! A well-stocked library is essential to meet our lofty literary goals. Our classroom library is a place where students will... -expand their perspectives. -ask questions. -build compassion and empathy. -develop a love of reading! By contributing to our classroom library, you will support a group of fantastic scholars on their journey to connect with books that help them love reading!
