The items I selected were chosen for different reasons. To begin with, I've requested board games so my students have something to do on days when they are forced to have recess indoors. I also have found that old fashioned board games are a great way for students to work on social skills while having fun. I chose the football and soccer ball because high quality balls for children can be surprisingly hard to find at elementary schools.
Secondly, I have worked hard to build a comprehensive classroom library of fiction and nonfiction books. I was lucky to grow up in a home surrounded by books, and this is what led me to be a life long reader. To my estimate, 35%-45% of my books come from my school, and the rest I have collected over the years from Goodwill, library sales, and the Children's Book Project in San Francisco (a wonderful organization). The titles on this list were books that I remember loving as a child, and which I have been unable to find at these discount sources. I would love to introduce them to my students.
The mechanical pencils, flair pens, and erasers will be used as incentives for students. Throughout the year, when I see students working exceptionally well, solving problems on their own, treating others with kindness, and any other activity worthy of acknowledgment, I will give them a raffle ticket which they can then use to procure one of these coveted items.
Finally, the rest of the materials are standard classroom supplies which I have found invaluable in my years of teaching. I was extremely deliberate in selecting these items because I am someone who hates waste. I can assure the donors that everything on this list will be used!
