You will notice the many diverse books on my list. I am trying to create a culturally responsive classroom library that includes diverse representations of women, LGBTQIA+, and other marginalized voices. I have mostly put graphic novels on my list because I work at a school where 50% are passing the state reading test. This is due to many reasons that include but are not limited to poverty, many English language learners, and lack of books in the home. graphic novels are an entry point for low readers to gain access to complex text. Besides general school supplies, you will also see team bonding and social-emotional games. I have put these on my list because the class I teach AVID is meant to be an acceleration class for students in the academic middle and are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. The goal of my class is to get students on a path where college is an option for them after high school. Part of my class is building an AVID family of support. We do this with class bonding and lessons to help students support their social-emotional skills.
