In my classroom many of our whole group learning experiences occur around our easel. It is a great tool to use for reading demonstrations and shared reading activities using big books. The books can be balanced on the tray at the bottom of the easel. This allows better access and visibility for all the students. Additionally, an easel is a great tool for holding up large chart paper and chart tablets. These tablets can then be used for writing demonstrations, shared and interactive writing experiences, math demonstrations, and number talks. We do have an easel in my classroom at this time however, it is small, wooden, and extremely old. Big books are hard to balance on the small tray and because it is wooden it is not magnetic. It is best suited for holding chart tablets and this limits its effectiveness as a classroom tool. A more versatile easel would lend itself to more in depth teaching and richer learning opportunities for my students. A larger magnetic easel will provide richer, more hands on learning experiences for more students because it will allow for both whole and small group lessons, as well as partner, individual, and group practice of the skills and concepts that they are learning. Additionally a magnetic easel can also provide more in depth hands on and visual learning as my students use the surface to practice and master skills with tools such as magnetic ten frames and magnetic letters, etc. Students will be able to take the information and skills they learn in whole group lessons and then practice in small groups and individually using the easel and the same tools that were used during the lesson. I believe this easel will enhance our classroom and allow for richer learning opportunities for my students.
