  • Bringing Books Back

    Funded Dec 27, 2021

What only took you a few minutes to do, will last a lifetime for my students, thanks to your generosity. The hight interest books my kids received have motivated them to read more. We have brought back DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read at the students' requests, which has not happened in years! Not only have I witnessed more motivation among students, but I am seeing more empathy and more understanding through class discussions. And our classroom library is being treated with much more respect! Instead of down time consisting of discussions about recess, video games, or the latest TikToks, there is a buzz in the room because of these stories! They are invested in the characters and plots! It was the perfect breath of fresh air and I can't wait to see how this year's students will react! Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Denise Bohn

  • Motivating Middle Schoolers

    Funded Dec 27, 2019

I sincerely thank you for your generous donations from the depths of my teacher soul! My middle schoolers are such reluctant readers that they are often embarrassed reading books that don't "look" cool. Normally it's like pulling teeth to get them to start reading a book! But now, with these high interest/low level books, their motivation will sky rocket! Now I can focus on teaching them HOW to read instead of simply convincing them to read! These books will allow me to teach more effectively and efficiently! Additionally, the benefits of annotating directly in these books will give my students a sense of ownership that they've never before experienced! I can't wait to share these books with them! Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Denise Bohn

Motivating reluctant readers is always a challenge! Especially for older students with learning disabilities that read way below grade level. Most of my students get distracted and easily frustrated, turning to video games or a device to keep them engaged. The right books at the right level can make a world of difference to an older struggling reader! The use of Literature Circles/Book Clubs helps to promote independent reading and an autonomous love of literature. But it can't be done without the right books! Adolescents need high interest books about issues to which they can relate without feeling embarrassed about the content. High interest books will help them read with ease and confidence, keep them focused, and inspire them to continue reading independently--without the constant need for external motivation! Please help me instill a love of reading and open their eyes to the endless possibilities that books give!
