Play-based sessions are a strategy used in speech-language therapy to address deficit communication skills. Using a kid's table, kitchen play sets (pots, pans, utensils, cookware set), tiered shelf, and artificial fruit, one could encourage the development of vocabulary, basic concepts (hot/cold, off/on), verbs (eat, drink, need, want), and sorting/categorizing. These items would also address skills such as following directions and making requests. A rolling cart would provide mobility to move between classrooms with these items and utilize inclusion strategies for therapy with typical peer models. Play-based sessions are essential in developing a student's early social-emotional and communication skills. Toys, such as baby dolls and doll accessories (high chair, car seat), are used to encourage the development of pretend play, labeling body parts, mealtime routines, naming clothing items, and use of pronouns or verbs. Multicultural dolls would promote inclusion and allow students of multiple races to see a toy with which they could identify.
