The bench I selected would serve as more sitting space for students in my office. Currently, there are only two chairs and that is simply not enough for when a group of student wants to consult with me. The bench would provide additional seating but also storage for all of the stress relief toys I hope to get. Sometimes students find comfort in fidgeting without even knowing it and these toys would provide that for them. Having them around in my office can support them through their anxiety, mental break down or simply help them learn to cope with stressors. I remember last school year a young man was crying in my office and started fidgeting with a set of tiny minions I have sitting on my desk. It helped him cry and share his fears. Unfortunately, our school sees many students who do not have access to food. I have found myself buying granola bars to ensure students have something in their stomach because hunger can prevent student focus. Students know that the counseling office will have fruit or a granola bars and so many students come work on scholarships, college applications, study for SAT/ACT prep or do homework. We love being able to provide them with a snack while they are working so hard to get to their college or career move.
