The books that are being asked for will make a difference in my students' learning because they will be reading. If kids have access to available books, they'll read. I try and provide a stellar classroom library in which my students can choose books that best fits their interest. My independent reading assignment encourages students to choose books that they want to read and then be able to enthusiastically, excitedly, and passionately talk about it. In order for this assignment to work well, my classroom is always in need of literature. I provide classics, non-fiction, graphic novels and a plethora of YA novels. The assignment ensures that students are searching through different genres while finding a book to pick and then physically holding it and flipping through the pages as they follow the story. Reading is an essential element to everyday life. The more students read, the better writers they become. The more students read, the more they recognize that their ways of living and thinking aren't isolated. The more students read, the more they open their eyes to the beauty of this world and open their minds to multiculturalism. Reading is vital. In the words of the great novelist Ray Bradbury: "You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them."
