For the first time this year, our school has a math intervention program. This math intervention program is designed to help students who are struggling with math and need additional support from a Math Specialist (me). I will get to help students on their specific level in a small group or one-on-one. This means that if a 3rd grader is struggling with the third-grade math content I can actually work with them on any second grade or first-grade skills they are not solid on. Often a child is struggling in math beaus they have not yet mastered the foundations. Our math intervention program is especially important this year. For starters, every child's education was interrupted by school closures in March. This sudden closure coupled with normal learning loss over the summer led to many students losing about a year's worth of math instruction. In addition, my school is considered a "turn around school", meaning it has previously been underperforming and we are working hard to strengthen the school's performance. This means that even before COVID and school closing many of our students were behind academically. The math intervention program is essential to closing the academic gaps our students have and to help them to feel confident in mathematics. We need some additional manipulatives or math tools. These tools give students the opportunity to learn math in a more concrete way as they can manipulate numbers, patterns, and actually DO the math. Manipulatives have been proven to be effective in helping solidify students understanding of math. Imagine being able to see why that rule your teacher told you about works!
