We are creating a “coffee shop” project for our school. This project will include students with different disabilities ranging from grades 2nd through 5th grade. We will meet 5 days a week working on social skills and then using the coffee shop to help them apply these social skills in a real life experience. The coffee shop will target self care and hygiene, encourage verbal communication and life skills. Ours students struggle with connecting life skills taught in the classroom to real life experiences in their daily lives. By creating our Coffee Shop, “A Whole LATTA love” We can not only explicitly teach our students these skills, but also give them the opportunity to apply these skills in a real world situation. We will use the coffee shop to teach communication skills with peers and adults, money concepts, following directions, organization, and food safety skills. Our hope is to give these kids a fun engaging experience that not only motivates them but shows them the “why” behind the skills we are teaching them in the classroom. We plan to use the proceeds to continue the coffee shop in the future and to fund a scholarship program for a graduating senior. Allowing us to also teach our students about the importance of giving back to our school and the community.
