There are many times in which my students cannot participate in learning activities because their sensory system in not working correctly. They may bite themselves or others, attempt to eat non-food items, or wonder around aimlessly. Having a sensory area with tools that are designed for their needs will help calm their senses so that they can get back to learning.
Currently my students have a corner of the room with homemade floor pillows and a small basket of balls and stuffed animals to fulfill their extensive sensory needs. This grant will give them a comfortable beanbag chair to hug them, sensory wall to touch and look at, and more handheld items from which to choose. They will also have covers for the florescent lights to help reduce anxiety and eye strain throughout the room. This will give them more options to meet their sensory needs throughout the school day.
