As the classroom library begins to take shape, these books will provide my students with expanded opportunities to see themselves, their peers, and their communities in books. A book that centers the main character as someone who looks like you and brings positivity and fun to your identity not only allows for learning, but expands enjoyment and a sense of self-identity. I am working on building a solid foundation of self-identity within each of my students to ensure they know their worth and their intelligence, even when they may feel left out. Taking care of the whole students, including academics and social-emotional, is central within our classroom and these books centralize some of their identities and bring them into the space. The wide range of picture books to chapter books to boys to girls to inclusion and positivity represents the diversity within my own resource classroom that brings the uniqueness of each of the students into the space. Reading is essential and my students will be continuously learning and expanding, these books will provide this opportunity.
