STEAM(science, technology, art, math) allows students to take thoughtful risks while engaging in science experiments. They use problem solving and collaboration while working through the creative process. A STEAM challenge is when groups of students are posed with a problem, one of their favorites is to elevate a basketball as high as possible with only newspaper and masking tape. Students are given planning time in their composition books and then the build begins. Each group gets the same materials and time. A winner is declared but as we all know failures and mistakes are learning experiences. They are given a short time to adjust their plans and time to rebuild and improve their designs. Reflection is key as students individually draw out the process to be displayed in the classroom. STEAM challenges and experiments are key in students understanding of science as well as as getting students excited about learning. Having the proper materials such as safety goggles, plastic test tubes and stop watches aid in the success of experiments or activities. The art supplies will allow students to illustrate and write about the activities they participate in.
