  • World Instruments and Stories for Diverse Learners!

    Funded Aug 18, 2022

Thank you so much for stepping up and contributing this year to make the World Instruments and Stories for Diverse Learners project possible! Just this week I received the final item and boy have these been a hit! From moving to music with our beautiful parachute to steel drum duets and sitting on the cajon and playing a rhythm to our singing, the students are thriving and thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to make music hands on in many different ways. One drum was not able to be filled in the order, so I replaced it with bell sets for the class which have gotten a lot of use! The stories have shown many of our children that they can be represented and it encourages them. Thank you for your generosity, you have made a huge impact in the lives of these beautiful children.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Palmer

  • Kindergarten Musicians!

    Funded Aug 18, 2021

Thank you so much for making it possible for my students to have their hands on musical instruments, composition tools, and movement scarves. Although I designed this project for my kindergarten students, with scheduling changes I do not see them until the spring. I decided to try using the music kits with my second graders and they loved them! They had been without music class during their first grade year and were so excited to have their own bag of supplies to be creative and perform music together.

This project will now impact approximately 750 students instead of the 250 I had planned. We could never have guessed we would still be dealing with the need to keep supplies individual at this point, but here we are, and I am thankful that I can give each student music making tools while they are in my classroom.”

  • Kindergarten Music Making Kits

    Funded Jan 14, 2021

Thank you for your investment in the lives of my Kindergarten students at Sara Lindemuth Anna Carter Primary school! This has been a successful year due to your generosity. We were able to assemble and distribute music kits to all students both in person and virtual in their first few music classes. The reactions from the students were of sheer delight! They could not believe that the rhythm sticks, the shaker eggs, the dancing scarves, and other homemade manipulatives were their own to use in every music class. To have their own set of supplies with their name on it gives a Kindergarten student a sense of ownership, purpose, and joy. The music kits were used on a nearly daily basis and there were more opportunities for rhythmic reading, performance on instruments, and expressive movement.

When listening to The Carnival of the Animals, students played shaker eggs and rhythm sticks to show the A and B contrasting sections in "Fossils." In "The Swan" they showed tempo, melodic contour, dynamics, and mood with their scarf movement. A favorite song to sing and play the shaker eggs to was "Silly Sam the Sneaky Snake which individual students decide how long the snake hides (rest with a fermata) and then lead the class to continue shaking and singing.

The next steps will be to send all of these kits home over the summer with instructions to access our musicplayonline account and hopefully the music making will continue over the summer before we make music again together in First Grade next year.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Palmer

  • Making Music Marvelous!!!

    Funded Aug 25, 2020

Thank you for the supplies for my music classroom. The dot spots gave the appropriate spacing between children. We had smaller classes this year as some students streamed my lessons from home. Students sat on every other spot in the room. We were unable to have music class outside due to needing to be in front of the camera for the students at home. The Bluetooth speaker has come in handy as I carry it around the building for when I have lunch duty and was able to share music with the first graders I am with at lunch. First grade students are not getting music class this year so I wanted to be able to share mini music lessons with them. I have created laminated supplies that can be cleaned for multiple uses.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Palmer

As the school music teacher in a diverse Title 1 school district with over 50 percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch, I have found creative ways to engage learners in authentic music making. We are in a small room in a modular unit but the room comes alive with the energy, curiosity, and music making of the young children who walk in the door every day. The students in my room prepare choral concerts, use technology to create, and learn music from around the world and across time periods. They become music readers, writers, appreciators, and performers. They are the heartbeat of the music room and the next generation of this worthwhile art form.
