In fifth grade, we learn about how light travels and its effect on life on Earth. Since light is all around and we tend to take it for granted, giving the students flashlights and putting them IN CHARGE of the light they can discover how light travels and how it affects life on Earth. The students will be actively engaged in two different inquiries with these materials. The flashlights will be used in both learning engagements. The first will be to construct a "light maze", utilizing the flashlights, mirrors, and modeling clay to place the mirrors. In a second activity, we will learn what causes seasons on Earth, using the globes in conjunction with the flashlights to demonstrate how the position of the "sun" in partnership with the tilt of the Earth creates direct and indirect sunlight.
