Research demonstrates that students who receive social-emotional and mental health support achieve better academically. School environment, classroom conduct, academic motivation, and students’ sense of awareness and welfare all improve as well which is why we have developed the Mental Health Department within our school.
Students will have access to a safe and confidential space where they can feel supported while they navigate healthy social, emotional, and behavioral development. Since our school has recently changed campuses - we have found that our mental health rooms do not have access to air conditioning. This is why I have requested a portable air conditioner to allow our students to focus on self-care and healthy mental health practices in a cool and air-conditioned environment. Using the books, worksheets, art supplies, and therapy games, students will work with a licensed psychotherapist individually and in small groups on topics including; but not limited to: Conflict resolution skills, Effective communication & assertiveness, Responsibility/Accountability, Self-esteem & Self-awareness, Leadership skills, Bullying/Cyber-bullying/Social media, Healthy Relationships/Boundaries, Depression management/Positive self-worth/Cognitive Distortions, Anxiety/Mindfulness/Stress management, Stages of Change, and Healthy coping mechanisms.
