Special Education is all about catering education to individual and diverse needs. It’s imperative to teach students in a variety of ways including seeing the material, hearing it, and touching it. The white boards and manipulatives help in that aim. I imagine a classroom where my students have options depending on the day. Sometimes we forget students aren’t perfect and they have needs just like everyone else. They have hard days, just like us. I have a variety of items that will really benefit my students. White boards are my favorite math and English tool. White boards allow students to explore individual problems and solutions without fear of mistakes in math, just as they allow for sentence and spelling construction. I’ve found some students are more confident and capable in learning using them rather than pen and paper. A pencil sharpener is a great tool to allow students to stand and move as they take care of needs of sharpening pencils (which I will always have available for my students). Sharpies will be used to create posters around the room, enhancing the learning. We can have posters of important equations (order of operations) or common sight words! Magnetic white boards will allow students to work out math equations.
