iPod and Proloquo2Go for Communication!
Funded Apr 8, 2011Your project made a lasting impact on introducing assistive technology to my students to use and to myself as a teacher. Students with Autism often struggle to communicate their wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas. Using an iPad with a touch based communication system dedicated for our classroom gave us the ability to have students who do not use spoken words communicate and participate more fully in class lessons and discussions. Overtime we were able to introduce students to more vocabulary and make it functional. We were also able to connect the iPads to the smartboard for whole group activities.
What my students were most excited about was having a more efficient way to communicate. Anything that removes a barrier to communication is a large component of success for my students. All of the students were thrilled to have this new technology and overtime several went on to eventually qualify for personal iPads with different voice output programs on them.
Beyond the use of the iPads in the class I was able to continue to grow as an educator in utilizing assistive tech to help my students gain independence and agency with using their voice.”
With gratitude,
