I'm so looking forward to my first year of full-time teaching! My aim is, first and foremost, to build strong relationships with my students. I believe it's the necessary foundation from which true buy-in and learning can happen. These relationships are built on trust. Students need to know we care. One of the ways I want to show them how much they matter is through a classroom community with all the resources they need to explore, question, investigate, be challenged and, ultimately, succeed. As a first year teacher, I could use your help constructing my classroom community. Everything matters - from basic organizational supplies like 3M hooks and pocket charts to instructional materials such as chart paper for anchor posters and post-it's for annotating. The aim for my sixth graders is to end the year as critical thinkers. This means repeated practice of breaking down the text and creating habits that bring about advanced reflection. In order to do this, I need to give them the tools to engage with the text. Annotation guidelines will be posted on anchor charts about the room. They will evolve as students develop this skill. Students will have an individual supply of post-its for annotating the text in books that aren't consumable.
