  • Giving the Gift of Reading for Christmas!

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

My school was 100% virtual at Christmas this year, so it was very important to me to have something special to give to each of my students as a way of letting them know that they are special to me. I chose to send a lap blanket that they could snuggle under on cold winter days, as well as special book that my students would not only enjoy reading but would reflect what I have learned about them so far this year.

I was able to deliver my packages to each of my students as they drove through my school parking lot the week before Christmas. This was the first chance I had to see my students & some of their family members face to face! The excitement we all felt at being able to see each other in person was very emotional at times.

I could not have provided all these resources without the support of generous donors like you. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blatner

  • 2nd Graders Going Virtual~ Supplies Needed

    Funded Sep 17, 2020

I want to thank you again for your generous gift of school supplies for my second graders. Some might say that getting a bag of school supplies isn't that exciting, but to a second graders, a new box of crayons, sharp pencils, erasers & a pencil sharpener PLUS their own bag to keep it in, is the best thing about going to school. I didn't get to see all of my students as they picked up their supplies, but there was lots of excitement about new things.

We have done a lot of drawing and coloring. The students have wonderful opportunities to relate to their thoughts and feelings about what is going on in their lives as well as what they understand about the material we are learning in class. One of our favorite supplies were the multicultural crayons they received. All of their beautiful skin colors are accessible in this box of crayons.

We look forward to returning to our classroom this year and we will continue to use these wonderful resources you have provided for my class.”

  • Loving Our Diversity

    Funded Aug 5, 2020

Reading time in second grade has been a mixture of joy and a bit of frustration this school year. Usually, during the beginning part of the year, I learn about how well the students read and what they like to read. That did not happen this year.

My school is 100% virtual at this time so it was very important to me to have a collection of special books that my students would not only enjoy but also ones they can relate to. I love to read to my class and this collection of books provides excellent examples of good writing as well as opportunities to talk about friendship, diversity, and what makes us all special.

I have a group of students that represent several cultures, so it is important to me to use texts that represent those cultures. Along with books that represent a variety of cultures, this year, I sent home a box of multi-cultural crayons to each student. When they have the opportunity to color a picture, they can draw a person that looks like them or that looks like their friend.

I could not have provided all of these resources without the support of generous doners.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blatner

  • We Stick Together with Kindness Mentor Text Library

    Funded Nov 26, 2019

I never could have imagined the impact of bringing books about kindness, friendship, caring, togetherness, and building each other up would have on my class this year. Every month we incorporate a different character-building trait into our day. The books that were donated provide the material we use every day. The students read about how different characters in the books they read are kind to each other or how they are not a bystander when they see someone being bullied. I also read some of the books to them and as I read, my students have an opportunity to share what they feel when they hear about these things happening (both the positive & negative character traits).

Last week one of my students moved away & it was truly touching to hear my students tell this other students how much they like her, and how glad they were to be her friend. Without my prompting, these second graders were building this student up, helping her with her fears of going to a new school in a different country. I know she will take their care & compassion with her, just as we will keep her examples of kindness with us.

These books in my class are changing the lives of my students. "Thank you" can never be said enough.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blatner

As students learn reading and writing skills and how to apply them while reading, my wish is for my students to have access to more than just textbooks. I’d like to be able to show them how a real author uses different story elements in the books they wrote. These texts are called Mentor texts. They can be used to teach just about any lesson you can think of. They model many standards, from reading, to writing, science, social studies, and yes, sometimes even math! Throughout our day, I like to give students the opportunity to learn from Mentor Texts, so they can see how authors use different writing skills in their books or to practice reading strategies in real books. These Mentor Texts will give my students the opportunity to think about how they may use their learned strategies in their own work. Helping students take risks and try out new things after seeing real world examples is the goal of using Mentor Texts. We will be using these texts during reading and writing workshop to serve as examples of the skills we are learning. The books on my Wishlist contain materials for some of my favorite lessons on fascinating people from history, comparing and contrasting different versions of fairytales and folktales, as well as helping my students become supportive friends of each other.
