I have the pleasure of working with students with significant cognitive and physical needs who benefit from assistive technology to access their education. Being able to adapt activities, such as cooking, is a motivating and functional way to incorporate communication skills into the classroom. Additionally, using cause and effect toys reinforces that their movements (the pushing of a button) have meaning and that they have control over their environment.
One of my students is blind, non-verbal, and has limited interest in his environment. Many of the items I am attempting to fund through this project will be used with him (and his classmates) to expand his interaction with his immediate environment by slowly bringing his outside environment under his control (e.g. using switches to make requests, controlling a fan/music/toys).
