My students live on the far south side of Chicago in a mostly African-American community. Consequently, the students in my classroom reflect those demographics. However, most of the books in my current classroom library mainly features animals or characters that don't reflect the members of my students' community. While they enjoy those books, I know it is very important for students to be exposed to literature with diverse characters and shared culture. This project will help me expose my kindergartners to books with diverse characters across various topics. My students will be very excited to see books with characters that look like them!
