I have been working with several students for a number of years on many speech sounds. Once they master a sound in words, phrases, then sentences, I make sure they have it mastered in conversation before moving on to the next sound. It can take at least a full year before I feel they are ready to move to the next sound. Some students can take even longer to work on a sound, especially if they have difficulty figuring out how to produce the sound. For example, I have one student who has worked on /r/ for a full year and has been unable to figure out how to produce the sound despite my best efforts to try every technique I know. Speech Buddies will give me another technique in my speech therapy toolbox to allow my students a faster and more effective way to work on those harder-to-treat sounds like /r/ and /ch/. They allow me a tactile manipulative that can be placed in the student's mouth so they can feel how their tongue is supposed to move in order to produce the sound. Studies have been completed using Speech Buddies and they demonstrated that therapy time can be shortened when Speech Buddies are implemented.
