Students shouldn’t just learn from their teachers!! Bringing together different populations on a campus can really enrich learning for all!!! When I was in high school, I was fortunate enough to be involved in a program which paired students interested in the teaching profession with classes for students with special needs. This experience helped foster my desire to make a difference in this world by becoming a special education teacher. I never hesitated, as I wholeheartedly pursued my degree in special education. Before this experience, I was not a very focused student and had no idea what my future held. I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach special education the past 25 years. This school year, I have been privileged with the chance to teach AVID at our high school. AVID is a college-readiness program where I will be working with mainly first generation college-goers. I could not imagine my career without working with students with special needs so I approached my incredible administration with the idea of AVID and ALE partnering with each other on a regular basis. After getting the “thumbs up” from my administration, I set out to create an inclusive, flexible classroom so the two programs can come together in a warm and inviting space. I am just in need of materials and games for activities for the two groups to do together. The materials need to be developmentally appropriate and of high interest for the ALE students. I am grateful for any assistance! I am hopeful all will benefit and we might find some future educators in the mix!!
