This activity demonstrates to students how DNA leads to specific shapes and structures in our bodies! Traditional genetics lessons teach students that DNA leads to a chain of amino acids, which is a protein; this activity goes a step further to help them visualize how this leads to actual structures in living organisms. I often tell students, "If you were a house, proteins would be the bricks, the wood, and the concrete." This lab demonstrates how these building blocks are created. Students use color-coded models of amino acids to learn which ones are attracted to each other, which ones repel each other, and which ones are attracted to and repel water. Then they use this information to fold the amino acid chain into a unique shape. In our bodies, this shape could be anything from a simple tube to a complex structure that carries out vital functions. Students learn about all of the jobs a protein can do, such as carrying oxygen or making ATP in the mitochondria!
