History is a fascinating subject that has the potential to capture students' interest and attention and empower them to become change agents in the world. Unfortunately, it is often a subject that emphasizes rote memorization, making students susceptible to indoctrination. By actively involving students in the process of constructing knowledge through unit projects aligned to key skills and conceptual understandings, students find their voice, build critical thinking skills, and improve their ability to work in teams. Throughout the year, we will be using these materials to conduct a number of projects. Students will use painter's tape to create a map of the world across the floor of the lunch room with each of the Post-Classical trade networks color-coded and labeled. They will use this map to conduct a trade simulation, with each group assigned to represent a party involved in trade during the era. Students will also create an interactive museum detailing the worldwide implications of the Columbian Exchange and the way that the diffusion of goods, ideas, animals, and diseases impacted the course of regional and global history. They will be evaluating the effects of industrialization and putting it on trial. These projects bring history to life, investing students in the discipline and building their skill sets in the process.
