Funded Aug 16, 2019Thank you all so much for donating to my classroom project. You were all an instrumental part in making sure my students have what they need to succeed this year!
Technology in the classroom has contributed tremendously to my students' daily learning. Each day, groups of students are able to read books on the iPads. This adds to their enthusiasm and motivation towards reading! Students are also able to have books read to them, which is another way for them to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. They are also able to access texts that we do not have available in our classroom library. They are making new discoveries daily in my classroom and learning so much! We are also lucky to have a period during our day of math rotations, where students are able to have time to play math games on the iPads. This year, we've started learning multiplication and division, and the learning apps available to them have tremendously helped them master their facts! It really has been an asset to my students are they continue to practice and make gains in their math fluency. This technology in my classroom has really opened up a new realm of learning.
Whenever you add technology to a learning experience, it engages them in new and exciting ways. My students know that this gift has been a privilege and that it helps "our brains grow smarter," as they will all say. Having access to iPads has motivated them and helped make them pioneers on their own learning journey. They are the ones who get to choose what books they want to read or what math they should be practicing. Student choice is so important within a child's education and I'm very thankful that they have been able to advocate for themselves and choose their learning whenever it is their turn on the iPad.
I'm so happy to say that my students have warmed up to this new learning experience with so much delight. For example, a struggling reader found that he was able to find a book he wanted to read in class on the iPad. He listened to the narrator read the story on the iPad as he followed along in his book. This aided in his comprehension and helped him hear what great reading fluency sounds like! His discovery warms my heart because he was able to figure out new ways of learning. In addition to this experience, my students will also come to me with suggestions for new apps to download that would further support their learning. They are taking charge of their learning in ways I hadn't thought possible!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Rooney
