Reading is the foundation for all other learning. As we begin to implement our new reading curriculum, Wit and Wisdom, I want to be able to provide my students with all the resources that are available for them to be successful. Wit and Wisdom, is based upon themes for each quarter of a school year. It integrates reading, writing, speaking and listening, science, art, and social studies standards into all areas of each module. This engaging curriculum allows my students to apply critical thinking skills, collaborative learning, and problem solving all into one, all while learning new reading and writing skills that can be applied in and out of the classroom. These complex, rigorous texts will empower my students to deepen their knowledge about these subjects and apply those skills to meet the grade level standards. This program integrates fiction and nonfiction reading materials, such as poetry, picture books, graphic novels, and novels into each module. This allows students to expand their knowledge and experiences with each genre. Due to the fact that this is our first year of implementation, we were only able to purchase the core texts that are required. I want to be able to offer my students more options and resources that correlate with the theme of the module. The supplemental books that go along with the core texts, will enable my students to be able to take these books home daily. This will help to improve their reading fluency, background knowledge, vocabulary, reading comprehension, self-esteem, and to help close the achievement gap. These supplemental books will allow my students choice and their continued love of reading!
