These materials will create a warm and enticing space to allow my students who struggle with reading to jump into different worlds, satisfy their curiosities, and create a life-long love of learning through the magical world of print. By consistently reading at their independent level, students can meet their two reading goals: growing by 5 guided reading levels and reading 30 books by the end of the year. Adding titles like, "New Kid" and "Narwhal and Jelly" along with rugs and cozy chairs will allow students to read their favorite books comfortably without interruptions. Students can also check these books out and read with their parents and family members. Additionally every other day in my small groups, students discuss and answer open-ended questions in their writing journals after reading a complex text like, what lesson(s) did the character learn by the end of the story? When answering these questions, a student is required to use textual evidence and the argumentative approach to support their claims. The benefits from this library (and environment) include providing the missing foundational reading and writing skills my students lack and the intrinsic motivation needed to become a proficient reader.
