As soon as the school year begins I have students from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade asking me, "Mrs. Warren, when does math team start?" The advanced learners and high achievers in these grades crave the chance they get to push themselves in math every year. The practice books I would like to put together will help me to organize and push their mathematical problem solving skills even further. Each teacher in grades 4-6 invites a few of their advanced math students to participate in math team. These students get to leave class once a week and meet together to learn problem solving. Sometimes these types of students are left behind because no one worries about them achieving grade level standards, but all children deserve the chance to be challenged. In addition to the depth of knowledge they gain in mathematics is they learn what it is like to fail and keep trying, an important life skill. I put the math team together on my own time and organize many parent volunteers to make it work. It can be overwhelming on top of my regular teacher duties, but the desire and excitement to do math, and the growth I have seen in students over the years, makes it worth every second. We are a very large school with limited space. Creating booklets for students to manage their practice and data with help make our limited practice time more effective.
