AVID is a College and Career Readiness program that whose mission is to close the achievement gap and prepare all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Our students come from families that, due to poverty and immigrant status, often lack the resources to provide the skills and support for their children to provide the skills necessary for University attendance. Our AVID program seeks to create an environment where those students can flourish and gain those skills. As part of that mission, our team has created an event that provides not only instruction and guidance in those skills but also motivation and excitement. This year will be the 4th annual AVID Boot Camp, an event coordinated and directed by high school AVID students. At the event, former AVID students who are either currently attending university or have graduated return to speak to our students to inspire them in their dreams and goals. The event is also attended by families and community members, and members of the Board of Education for the Alvord Unified School District. This year, we will also be including 5th-grade students, as our district has expanded the AVID program to all of our 14 elementary schools. As well, Coordinators from all our high schools and middle schools are planning to attend.
