The creation of a “Reading Zone” is aimed at encouraging the habit of reading among students, many of whom are weak readers. It is a project being created by NMSHS students engaged in a school-based community service program called “Seeds of Change.” Although the original service program focused on increasing students’ awareness and appreciation of the importance of plant life to maintaining a healthy environment, these service students see the creation of a Reading Zone as an opportunity to incorporate the appreciation of plant life with the development of a critically needed skill - reading. Plant-life will provide the appropriate background for this outdoor space where students can sit and read at their own leisure or engage in other reading-related activities. Reading is essential to academic success. Providing opportunities for students to develop a love of reading and the reading skills that grow through practice is a beneficial endeavor worthy of support. In addition to independent reading, this space will also give students a forum for mixed groups’ book club readings under the supervision of the school’s reading department. Along with the plant life, a mural will be painted on the ground to highlight the purpose of this designated area. The acquisition of seating made possible by the six Picnic Table Bench combinations and the mural paints will help service students accomplish their goal of providing their peers with a non-threatening environment to develop a love for reading.
