Students are more willing and open to learn in a comfortable and inviting workspace. Whiteboard tables allow students to write and practice math skills on their desks. Changing paper and pencil to whiteboard and markers is a small change with big results! The ease of erasing and starting over sends the message to students that in math it is ok and even expected of them to make mistakes! Having whiteboard tables allows students to work in a wider area and feel like they're also the teacher. Students will take introductory notes of the lesson in their journals. When it is time to practice students will be able to write on their whiteboard tables! The colors, thickness, and ease of writing with dry-erase markers will allow students to practice, practice, practice and enjoy making progress! It also enables me as a teacher to circulate the room and quickly spot-check if students are on the right track and identify errors in logic or procedures. Some tables will have exercise ball chairs for students that need to have some movement while working! The focus and productivity students experience by simply being able to write on their desks makes a world of difference. Students go from being passive participants to actively engaged. They pay more attention to detail and master skills much quicker. This is absolutely necessary for the type of students I teach. They scored level 3s in assessments last year—which means they have significant gaps in knowledge and need support. Though they may understand the concept they tend to easily trip up their procedural math steps due to underlying gaps. Having whiteboard tables will allow them the space to make mistakes and continuously improve in a comfortable and fun way!
