Coding robots will promote academic excellence and creativity and help students become more engaged in learning which will ultimately close the achievement gap in Gibson's vulnerable population. Student achievement will improve through the implementation of Dash and Dot as it provides benefits allowing for inquiry based, process-focused, and student-centered learning which is motivating, engaging, and real-world inspired. Knowledge is taught the way it is used in the real world, with concepts and subjects interwoven seamlessly. Students are able to integrate and apply meaningful and important content with purpose and reason behind everything taught and learned. Because students engage and apply concepts in a deeper, more thorough way, a greater understanding of the concepts occurs, increasing student achievement. (In alignment with Gibson’s School Performance Plan Priority Goal One to increase students’ proficiency in English and Language Arts by 2019.) Student achievement scores on statewide tests rise over time when students have access to one on one technology as was evidenced in a study by Bebell and Kay (2010) which is in alignment with Gibson’s School Performance Plan Priority Goal One to increase students’ proficiency in English and Language Arts by 2019. Elementary children have a wonderful sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness that naturally leads them into exploring and learning which is why coding in elementary is so important. The greatest gift we can give students during the elementary years is a driving curiosity, a belief in their abilities, a thirst for knowledge, and a passion to grow. Teamwork, collaboration, and communication becomes a major focus and students have the freedom to think critically, creatively, and to become innovative. With these skills in their toolbox, they will be equipped to tackle the challenges of higher education and the real world.
