Many of my students struggle with ADD and ADHD. As an adult who struggles with this disorder as well, I truly empathize with my students. It's easy for me to stay focused when I can walk around the room all day as a teacher. But, as a student, it was incredibly difficult for me to sit still in my seat. If I wasn't moving, even in some small way, I wasn't learning. The same goes for my own students today.
I don't want the needs of my students with ADD or ADHD to be neglected just because society tells them to sit down and be quiet. I want to help my students use their need for movement as a tool for success in my classroom and in the world beyond.
Often, as high school students, my students don't move at all during the day. They sit in class all day and then go sit at home. Students, especially those with ADD and ADHD, need constant movement to focus and be happy. I want my classroom to be an ADD/ADHD-friendly environment, which may be the only such environment they experience on a daily basis. To help create such an environment, I've requested a wobble chair, a balance ball chair, fidget chair bands, and wobble cushions to allow students freedom of movement, even while they sit. I've also requested a mini trampoline for student use when levels of concentration may be decreasing. The fidget toys will allow students to move their hands while learning new content. Often, lack of movement is the only thing in the way of a child's learning. These tools will help my students learn that they can be successful no matter what.
